Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to critics questioning his vow to serve only one four-year term if elected president, insisting his promise is unwavering and rooted in his character of integrity.

Obi, in a statement on Sunday, said his political journey has always been guided by honour and verifiable service, unlike what he described as the pattern of broken promises by many in Nigeria’s political space.

“Some say even if I swore by a shrine, I wouldn’t be believed. Another person suggested that anyone promising to serve only one term should go for psychiatric evaluation,” Obi noted.

“But I am not like them. My track record is there,” he added.

The Labour Party flag bearer in the 2023 elections, argued that transformative leadership doesn’t require a lifetime in power, citing global icons such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela who made a lasting impact despite serving brief terms.

He said his vow to serve only one term is “sacrosanct” and insisted that Nigerians must begin to see leadership as a means to serve, not to entrench personal interests.

“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution,” Obi said.

He maintained that 48 months is enough for a prepared leader to deliver results, promising to focus on good governance, insecurity, education, healthcare, economic productivity, and corruption.

“I intend not merely to make an impression, but to deliver concrete results,” he said. “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
