Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed regret over his role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the party has failed to improve the nation’s condition since its emergence ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Speaking on Thursday during a press briefing in Abuja, where opposition leaders convened to discuss the state of the country and possible political alignments for 2027, Atiku reflected on the coalition that brought the APC into being.

He recalled that key opposition figures united under the APC banner in 2014 to challenge the administration of then-President Goodluck Jonathan, motivated by concerns over insecurity and economic instability.

“We came together in 2014 because we believed democracy was faltering. The issues then were insecurity and the economy. But today, the situation has become even worse than what we set out to correct,” Atiku said.

The former presidential candidate noted that the current realities in the country surpass the challenges that initially prompted the APC’s formation, stressing the need for lessons from past political alliances.

He urged any new coalition or opposition movement to focus on rebuilding democratic institutions and restoring public confidence in governance.

“We must ensure that whatever steps we take now are aimed at restoring true democracy in Nigeria,” he added.
