In a dramatic political shift, twenty-five members of the Osun State House of Assembly, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election, have officially defected to the Accord Party.

The lawmakers made the announcement on Friday, following the path of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who left the PDP for Accord in December 2025 and has since been cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest the August 15 Osun governorship election under the new party.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, the decision was reached during a parliamentary meeting and formally declared at the Banquet Hall, in the presence of the governor and top Accord Party leaders.

“After the parliamentary meeting, the members proceeded to meet with the governor and party leaders, where the formal declaration was officially made by the Speaker. They reaffirmed their unwavering support for Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke and their commitment to quality representation, transparency, and responsive leadership,” the statement partly read.

The defecting lawmakers also urged their supporters and well-wishers to remain committed as they embark on this new political chapter. Tiamiyu added that the move was aimed at ensuring continuity in governance and accelerating development across Osun State.

He noted, “The members had resigned from the PDP weeks ago. After deep reflection and consultations with supporters, political associates, and key stakeholders, they resolved to align with Accord. They believe that Accord provides a more stable, inclusive, and people-centred platform to continue serving the people of Osun State.”

With the defection of the 25 PDP lawmakers, including Speaker Adewale Egbedun, the 26-member Osun Assembly now has Mr. Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress as the only opposition lawmaker.
