A stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun East Senatorial District turned dramatic on Monday as party leaders endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun for the 2027 Senate seat while the incumbent lawmaker, Senator Gbenga Daniel, was denied access to the venue.

The endorsement was announced at the meeting held in Ijebu-Ode, which brought together party stalwarts, women leaders, members of the Ogun State House of Assembly, and local government chairmen to deliberate on the district’s political direction ahead of the next general elections.

It was gathered that the meeting, which focused on strategies ahead of the 2027 polls, ended with a unanimous decision by party leaders to back Abiodun for the Ogun East senatorial seat.

A party chieftain, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the decision was reached after extensive consultations across the district.

“This is a collective resolve of stakeholders in Ogun East. The governor has demonstrated capacity, and we believe he will represent the district effectively at the Senate,” the source said.

However, the meeting was overshadowed by tension as Daniel, who currently represents Ogun East in the Senate, was reportedly denied access to the venue.

A viral video seen by our correspondent showed the senator’s convoy being stopped at the entrance of the meeting venue, with some of his supporters gathered outside chanting in his support.

Sources alleged that the former governor was prevented from gaining entry over disagreements regarding accreditation and security arrangements.

But a political aide to the governor, Biyi Adeleye, denied that Daniel was barred from attending the meeting.

“We didn’t stop him. The restriction was on vehicles due to security concerns. He was asked to come in as an individual participant, but he declined,” Adeleye said.

Efforts to get Daniel’s reaction to the development were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
