The Governance Advisory Council, the apex advisory body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, has endorsed the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, in a post on X.
“FLASH: The Governance Advisory Council today unanimously endorsed and adopted the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, to be consensus candidate for the 2027 elections in Lagos State,” he wrote.
Gawat said the endorsement was announced by GAC leader, Tajudeen Olusi, during a meeting held at Lagos House, Marina.
He added that members of the council also paid for Hamzat’s nomination form, a move seen as a strong signal of unity within the party ahead of the polls.
“The GAC members also announced that they paid for his nomination form,” he stated.
The endorsement came barely 24 hours after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly backed Hamzat as his preferred successor.
Sanwo-Olu announced his support following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where the deputy governor formally declared his intention to contest the governorship seat before members of the State Executive Council and party leaders.
“We just received Mr Deputy, who came with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention to contest for the governorship position.
“It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu also cited Hamzat’s “integrity, loyalty, commitment and support” over the years, noting that he is ready to lead the state.
