Former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has congratulated the state Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, on his emergence as the All Progressives Congress consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election, while reaffirming support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.
Ambode, in a statement on Thursday, described Hamzat as a committed party loyalist whose emergence reflected years of dedication, consultation, and alignment with the party’s ideals of unity and progress.
He said, “Your adoption as our party’s consensus candidate is a reflection of your loyalty, hard work and dedication to the party for over two decades. I am sure that our state will benefit immensely from your wealth of experience and skills in governance.”
The former governor also tied the future prosperity of Lagos and Nigeria to the continued leadership of Tinubu, expressing confidence in the President’s vision for national growth.
“I strongly believe that the greater prosperity of Lagos and indeed Nigeria is firmly tied to the continued governance of Mr President. I am confident that his vision and aspirations will yield bountiful returns,” he added.
Ambode pledged to mobilise support for the APC at both state and federal levels, setting a target of three million votes for Tinubu in Lagos State during the 2027 general elections.
“As Lagos APC, our mission should be to deliver at least three million votes for Mr President and support other South-West states to achieve strong results. We must also ensure that all our party’s nominated senators and representatives are returned to the National Assembly,” he said.
Hamzat’s emergence followed a series of endorsements within the party, including backing from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Governance Advisory Council, which unanimously adopted him as its preferred candidate.
Speaking after a meeting with the President in Abuja, Hamzat expressed confidence in the task ahead, noting that his experience in governance had prepared him for the responsibility.
“Nobody is ever fully ready because the assignment is audacious, but I have gained experience serving as Deputy Governor. I understand the system and the demands of the office,” he said.
