Former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has declared his intention to contest the Yobe State governorship election following the collapse of consensus arrangements among aspirants.

The former police chief disclosed this on Sunday while speaking with journalists in Damaturu, noting that the failure of earlier agreements prompted his decision to formally join the race.

He revealed that at least four other aspirants had already obtained their nomination forms, a development he said confirmed that the consensus deal had broken down.

“I therefore obtained the form to join the race. No one has ever shown me where to sign or even asked me to speak,” he said.

Alkali explained that his understanding of consensus was based on a voluntary agreement among aspirants to support a single candidate, stressing that such an arrangement had clearly failed in the state.

“That is the meaning of consensus. Now that this has not happened in Yobe, I have decided to go ahead with my ambition,” he added.

He further disclosed that he arrived in Damaturu over the weekend to verify the authenticity of his nomination forms and consult relevant party guidelines and stakeholders before proceeding.

On the possibility of stepping down if party leaders intervene, Alkali said his decision would depend on the terms presented.

“I would, if I agree to the terms,” he said.

He urged his supporters to remain steadfast and committed throughout the primary election process, regardless of any changes to the schedule.
