A House of Assembly hopeful in Osun State, Hon. Osundare Osundokun, popularly known as DKSEA, has condemned the reported vandalism and destruction of campaign billboards belonging to Governor Ademola Adeleke, describing the incident as an attack on democracy and political freedom.
Osundare, who is aspiring to represent Oriade State Constituency, stated this in a statement issued on Friday, while reacting to reports that campaign billboards of Adeleke, the governorship candidate of the ACCORD Party, were destroyed in parts of the state.
The affected areas reportedly include Irewole, Ayedaade, Irepodun and Osogbo Local Government Areas.
He called on security agencies to immediately investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
According to him, political contests should be centred on ideas, performance and acceptance among the people, rather than intimidation, violence and destruction of campaign materials.
Osundare warned that no individual or group should be allowed to introduce fear and tension into the political atmosphere because of desperation for power.
“The destruction of campaign billboards belonging to Governor Ademola Adeleke is condemnable and unacceptable in a democratic setting. Democracy must be protected through peace, tolerance and respect for differing political interests,” he said.
He further urged political stakeholders, party supporters and youths across the state to avoid acts capable of heating up the polity and instead embrace peaceful democratic engagement.
The politician reaffirmed his commitment to peace, grassroots politics, democratic values and issue based leadership in Osun State.
