Former Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Tolu Odebiyi, has dismissed renewed attacks on the indigeneship of the Ogun State All Progressives Congress consensus governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, describing the controversy as a needless distraction from issues affecting the people of the state.

Odebiyi stated this in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, where he urged politicians and their supporters to concentrate on ideas and policies capable of improving the lives of Ogun residents rather than engaging in divisive political arguments.

The former lawmaker said Ogun State was currently facing enormous economic and security challenges that required serious leadership and practical solutions ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

According to him, “The recent attacks on the indigenisation of our Ogun State APC consensus candidate are needless distractions that we do not need at this critical time.”

He added, “With the numerous challenges confronting our people, especially in the areas of the economy and security, any serious incoming governor already has enormous responsibilities ahead and should remain focused on practical, solution-driven initiatives that will improve the lives of our citizens.”

Odebiyi maintained that the issue surrounding Adeola’s indigeneship had long been settled, insisting that the senator remained a bona fide indigene of Ogun State, particularly Yewaland.

“The issue surrounding Distinguished Senator Adeola’s indigeneship has long been settled and clearly established. He is a bona fide indigene of Ogun State, particularly Yewaland,” he said.

The former senator also referenced a recently published booklet titled, “The Progressive Yayi,” which he said contained details of Adeola’s roots, parental lineage, and ancestry.

While defending Adeola’s Ogun ancestry, Odebiyi equally acknowledged the governorship ambition of Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, describing him as a serious contender with deep roots in Ogun State, especially in Ijebuland.

“I also believe my brother, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, remains a serious contender with deep, respected, and undeniable roots in Ogun State, particularly in Ijebuland,” he stated.

He, however, called on political stakeholders across party lines to elevate the standard of political discourse in the state by focusing on issue-based campaigns and constructive engagement.

Odebiyi said, “I would strongly advise all stakeholders and supporters across party lines to elevate the standard of political engagement and focus more on innovative ideas, constructive debates, and creative policy solutions capable of transforming Ogun State into a true State of Excellence.”

“The people of Ogun State deserve issue-based politics centered on development, progress, and prosperity, not unnecessary distractions. Yayi is our own and so shall it be,” he added.
