As political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, have separately pledged to transform the state’s culture and tourism sector into a major driver of economic growth, job creation and global recognition.

The two contenders made their commitments on Saturday during the 79th birthday celebration of renowned Ifa priest and cultural icon, Ifayemi Elebuibon, in Osogbo.

Represented by the Commissioner for Political Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations, Dr Biyi Odunlade, Adeleke described Elebuibon as “an icon and pride of the state,” assuring that his administration would continue to honour individuals whose achievements have projected Osun positively on the global stage.

“Baba is a professional and a reference point. I am so excited to be part of this and particularly to represent my boss,” Odunlade said.

Speaking on the governor’s vision for the sector, he stressed that culture and tourism remain strategic avenues for economic development and revenue generation.

“Culture and tourism are two major areas where, apart from identifying with our race, it is also a way of getting revenue for the state. In all parts of the globe, African and especially Yoruba culture is being promoted in special ways,” he said.

He added, “If we can package it in such a way Christians are packaging Jerusalem and the Muslims are packaging the Hajj to Saudi Arabia, it should be a source of income for us here and a way of encouraging our younger ones to love our culture and traditions.”

Also speaking at the event, Oyebamiji’s representative, Amitolu Shittu, said the APC candidate recognises the immense potential of the culture and tourism industry and intends to leverage expert knowledge to expand investment opportunities if elected.

“I am here representing Osun APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. He respects Baba Elebuibon, and he recognises his contributions towards making Osun known across the globe,” Shittu said.

Outlining the party’s plans, he stated, “Oyebamiji has a big idea to make the culture and tourism sector bigger and more attractive to investors across the globe.”

He further explained that the APC candidate had identified key tourism assets across the state for development.

“He has identified those tourist sites, and efforts will be made towards making the sites more attractive. Osun has potential to create jobs and make the sector a big money spinner with the right ideas. Oyebamiji is ready to invest in the sector,” Shittu added.

In his remarks, Elebuibon attributed his successful career in preserving Yoruba culture and tradition to the unwavering support of his late mother and his mentor, the late dramatist Duro Ladipo.

The event drew an array of dignitaries, including the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, the Olojudo of Ido-Osun, Oba Olayinka Jokotola, the Olufon of Ifon Orolu, Oba Peter Ipadeola, Nollywood actors, traditionalists and culture promoters from within and outside Nigeria.
