The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular juju musician, Mrs Iyun Janet Oluwatoyosi Ajilore, widely known as Saint Janet and fondly called “Mama Yabis.”

Her death was confirmed on Sunday by fellow gospel juju artiste, Akinola Ayoola Michael, popularly known as Alayo Singer, who announced the sad news in an emotional Instagram post. The singer reportedly died on Saturday after a brief illness, bringing to an end a colourful music career that endeared her to fans across the country.

“We live today and tomorrow we die. St Janet, may God grant you eternal rest,” Alayo Singer wrote while sharing an image of a burning candle in tribute to the late musician.

The sad development was also confirmed by journalist Otunba Femi Davies in a Facebook post, where he described Saint Janet as a vibrant juju and highlife performer known for her energetic stage presence and socially conscious music.

“St Janet (Iyun Janet Ajilore), a popular Nigerian juju and highlife musician known for her vibrant live performances, energetic stage presence and socially unfiltered party tracks, is dead. She died after a brief illness on Saturday,” Davies stated.

Known for blending juju and highlife rhythms with humour, satire and frank social commentaries, Saint Janet built a loyal fan base through performances that reflected everyday experiences and societal issues. Her distinctive style earned her the nickname “Mama Yabis,” making her a familiar figure at parties, celebrations and social gatherings.

Beyond her music, she was admired for her bold personality, spontaneity and unique ability to engage audiences with witty commentaries that resonated with people from different walks of life.

Her death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, colleagues and admirers, many of whom have taken to social media to celebrate her contributions to Nigeria’s indigenous music industry and pray for the peaceful repose of her soul.

Details of her burial arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
