As football fans across the globe gear up for the much-anticipated UEFA Nations League final, the spotlight has landed squarely on two players at opposite ends of the footballing spectrum Portugal’s 40-year-old legend Cristiano Ronaldo and Spain’s 17-year-old rising star, Lamine Yamal.

The final, scheduled to hold this Sunday in Munich, has been widely billed as a symbolic passing of the torch, pitting one of football’s all-time greats against the sport’s most electrifying new talent. But for Ronaldo, the match goes beyond individual narratives.

“There are different generations — one is coming in and another is exiting the stage. If you want to see me as another generation, then that’s OK,” Ronaldo told journalists.

“But when you talk about a clash between Cristiano and someone else, that’s not how it works. The media always try to hype things up, which is normal, but it’s one team versus another team.”

Ronaldo, who scored the winning goal in Portugal’s semi-final victory over host nation Germany, dismissed the idea of a personal rivalry with Yamal.

The Spanish youngster had lit up Spain’s thrilling 5-4 semi-final win against France with a stunning brace and a man-of-the-match performance.

“You’ve been talking about Lamine a lot, and you’re right to do so because he’s very good,” Ronaldo acknowledged. “But I’d like to talk about the team. They’ve got Nico Williams, great midfielders like Pedri, and their coach, Luis de la Fuente, is very good very strong, very disciplined.”

Ronaldo, who famously emerged as a teenage sensation at Sporting CP before being snapped up by Manchester United in 2003, said the football world should be patient with Yamal and allow him space to grow.

“The kid has been doing very well,” he said, smiling, “but what I ask is for you to let him grow, not put him under pressure. For the good of football, we need to let him grow in his own way and enjoy the talent he has.”

He added jokingly, “He’s just three years older than my son and already doing amazing things and he’s got that funny hair,” he chuckled.

Like a young Ronaldo, Yamal has enjoyed an incredible rise, helping Barcelona clinch a league and cup double this season and playing a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph in Germany last summer.

The two Iberian giants are no strangers to continental glory. Spain are the reigning Nations League champions after their 2023 triumph, while Portugal won the tournament’s maiden edition in 2019.

Interestingly, Portugal have not defeated Spain in a competitive fixture since Euro 2004 a match that featured a young Ronaldo making his mark on the international stage.

Now, two decades later, the veteran returns to the big stage hoping to lead his country to another title — while keeping the media narrative focused on collective achievement rather than individual stardom.

“Spain, in my opinion, are maybe the best national team in the world right now,” Ronaldo said.

“So this final is not about Cristiano Ronaldo or Lamine Yamal. It’s about Spain versus Portugal, and that’s what we should all be excited about.”
