The Federal Government has postponed the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the postponement became necessary due to the state funeral of the late President, which will take place in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, on the same day.
The government added that a new date for the FEC session will be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the burial proceedings have been concluded.
President Tinubu had earlier directed that a special session be held in honour of his predecessor, citing his “invaluable contributions to Nigeria” as a reason for the solemn tribute.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday as part of national mourning for the late leader, who died on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.
His remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria by noon on Tuesday before being buried in accordance with Islamic rites in Daura.
President Tinubu had also ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days. Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila were directed to travel to London to commiserate with the Buhari family and accompany the late President’s body back to the country.
The former Head of State, who ruled Nigeria between 2015 and 2023, is being mourned nationwide, with tributes pouring in from citizens, political leaders, and foreign dignitaries.
