The Oke-Ona kingdom in Egbaland is set to witness a historic transition as Chief (Mrs) Afolashade Kokumo, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Ogun State Civil Service, has been named the new Iyalode of Oke-Ona.

Her installation, scheduled for February 8, 2025, marks the continuation of a legacy deeply rooted in leadership, service, and tradition.

Kokumo, a prominent figure in the community, was a close protégé of the late Iyalode Alaba Lawson, who held the prestigious title until her passing.

The choice of Kokumo is seen as a testament to her dedication and the deep trust Lawson had in her. Throughout her lifetime, Lawson openly expressed confidence in Kokumo, describing her as a woman of integrity and vision.

Her installation will take place at the palace of the Osile Oke-Ona of Egbaland, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, Karunwi III, Sapon, Abeokuta, with an array of distinguished guests, traditional rulers, and indigenes of the kingdom expected to attend.

The occasion is anticipated to be a momentous one, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Oke-Ona.

In a significant addition to the day’s events, the Osile Oke-Ona of Egbaland, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, will also confer the chieftaincy title of Mayegun of Oke-Ona on Kokumo’s husband, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police.

This dual conferment further solidifies the couple’s influence and contributions to the community.

Preparations are already in full swing for the grand ceremony, which is expected to draw guests from across the country and beyond.

The event not only signifies the continuation of a cherished tradition but also highlights the role of women in leadership within the Yoruba socio-cultural landscape.
