A prominent grassroots politician in Ogun State, Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka, popularly known as Ayinla Egba, on Tuesday announced his resignation from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and unveiled a new political structure known as the United Premier Movement (UPM).

The announcement followed months of speculation about his next political move, after his performance in the last local government elections.

In a statement personally signed and made public on Tuesday, Chief Shoyinka thanked residents of Abeokuta South Local Government and the entire Egbaland for their continued support throughout his political journey.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the good people of Abeokuta South and Egbaland for your unwavering support—especially before, during, and after the last local government elections,” the statement read.

He said the decision to dump the ADP was taken after wide consultations with key political stakeholders across the 15 wards in Abeokuta South. According to him, the party’s ideology no longer aligns with the vision of his team and supporters.

“This decision has been formally communicated to the leadership of the ADP. We believe they will accept our exit in good faith,” he stated.

Chief Shoyinka also used the opportunity to announce the transformation of his political base, previously known as the Ayinla Egba Movement, into the United Premier Movement (UPM)—a grassroots political platform he described as committed to integrity, service, and long-term development.

“We are not desperate to form new alliances or join the bandwagon simply for convenience. Our focus remains clear: to align with individuals and institutions that reflect our values,” he said.

The UPM, he explained, will serve as a rallying point for visionary and development-driven individuals in Abeokuta South. He urged citizens not driven by personal gain, but by patriotism and sacrifice, to join the new movement.

While he did not disclose his next political destination, Chief Shoyinka assured that further announcements would be made after consultations are concluded.
