The Oyo State Government has distributed 18,000 tablet devices to teachers in public primary and secondary schools across the state in a move aimed at improving teaching efficiency and boosting learning outcomes.

The initiative, sponsored by the World Bank in partnership with the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYSUBEB) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), is being implemented under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme.

Speaking at the symbolic presentation held at Emmanuel College, Samonda, Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by his deputy, Barrister Adebayo Lawal, described the distribution as a “bold step towards digitalising education” in Oyo State.

He said the tablets, preloaded with teaching resources and e-learning tools, will help teachers prepare and deliver lessons more effectively while enhancing classroom engagement.

“This is not just about giving out gadgets; it is about equipping our teachers with modern tools to match global best practices in education,” the deputy governor said, noting that teachers will undergo a compulsory four-week training at 16 centres across the state to ensure effective use of the devices.

He explained that the tablets will also assist in tracking lesson plans, assessing students’ performance, and providing real-time data for policy formulation.

Teachers present at the event praised the initiative, describing it as a game-changer that would reduce the stress of manual lesson preparation and expose both teachers and students to essential digital skills.

Chairman of Oyo SUBEB, Dr Nureni Adeniran, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Intervention, Hon. Suraj Tiamiyu, both commended the administration’s commitment to educational transformation, noting that the devices come with security features to monitor usage and ensure compliance with set objectives.

The event was attended by the South West Zonal Director of UBEC, Mr. Alabi Baba Asaaju, commissioners, and other top government officials.
