Chief Kanran began acting from childhood, participating in stage dramas during Easter and Christmas celebrations. He studied at the Centre for Cultural Studies (now Creative Arts Department) of the University of Lagos before proceeding to Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a diploma in directing, acting, and film production.

Over the years, he hosted a television programme on MTV in Lagos and later ventured fully into filmmaking. He began acting professionally in 1975, taking on the role of Kurunmi in the play written by Prof. Ola Rotimi.

Kanran also featured in “Mirror in the Sun” and “Images,” with his stage breakthrough coming in Langbodo, Nigeria’s drama entry to Festac ’77 at the National Arts Theatre, Lagos. He became widely known for playing Alaafin Kanran in a drama aired on Lagos Television on October 1, 1988.

His death adds to a series of recent losses in the Yoruba Nollywood industry, which has seen the passing of actors Seun Confirm, Odunayo Olufemi (Oloto), Omotola Odunsi, Kayode Peters, and Berry White in recent months.
