Tragedy struck in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday when a speeding Lexus Jeep rammed into two commercial tricycles, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred at the Obosi Old Road axis, throwing the busy community into panic as traders and passers-by scampered for safety.
According to witnesses, the driver of the Lexus Jeep, suspected to have been speeding, lost control and crushed the tricycles before fleeing the scene. The impact of the crash reportedly left one victim dead on the spot, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the vehicle had been recovered and investigations had begun.
“The driver of the Lexus Jeep abandoned the vehicle and fled immediately after the crash. Our operatives moved swiftly to the scene, rescued the injured victims and recovered the vehicle. Normalcy has since been restored,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at a morgue.
The police also assured residents of a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the accident and to track down the fleeing driver.
