The Olowu of Kuta, His Royal Majesty Oba Dr. Hammed Oyelude Makama, CON, Tegbosun III, has joined prominent Nigerians in celebrating former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), who clocks 84 today.
In a goodwill message personally signed, Olowu congratulated the elder statesman and described him as an enigma whose impact on Nigeria’s history cannot be overlooked.
According to him, “IBB is an enigma. He has carved a niche for himself as a former military president. His tenure witnessed the completion of many monumental legacy projects that are still visible until today. His Hill Top Mansion in Minna has become a Mecca of sort for those who aspired to lead Nigeria.”
Oba Makama further noted that Babangida remains one of the most misunderstood leaders of his era but expressed confidence that history would be kind to him.
Reflecting on Babangida’s influence even after leaving office more than three decades ago, Olowu recalled the launch of his autobiography A Journey in Service, which attracted tributes from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading businessmen including Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu, Jim Ovia, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Arthur Eze.
“On behalf of myself, my Oloris and Olowu-in-Council, all members of the defunct IBB Vision 2003 and Vision 2007, I wish President Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) a happy birthday. I also wish him all the best as he ages gracefully,” Olowu added.
Born on August 17, 1941, Babangida ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, a period that witnessed significant political and economic reforms.
