A final-year student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Miss Dorcas Omotosho, has died after a failed abortion procedure at a private clinic in Lokoja, the state capital.
The 26-year-old student reportedly visited Al-Hassan Clinic and Maternity in the Sarkin Noma community of Lokoja Local Government Area on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, to terminate a six-month-old pregnancy.
According to findings, the abortion was carried out, but the medical team at the clinic could not stop the bleeding that followed. “She bled to death after the procedure,” a source familiar with the incident said.
It was gathered that a police officer who arrived at the scene took recordings of the deceased before her body was moved to the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Lokoja, for preservation.
The police have since arrested the owner of the clinic, who is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Lokoja for questioning.
When contacted, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic said they were not aware of the development. The institution’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, explained, “The school is not aware because the students are on holiday at the moment.”
Efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye, for confirmation were unsuccessful as his phone line was not accessible at the time of filing this report.
