The 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to create a new state for the ancient city before 2027.
The newly crowned monarch made the appeal shortly after receiving the Staff and Instrument of Office from Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, during his coronation ceremony held at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan on Friday.
Addressing the gathering, which included traditional rulers, government officials, and prominent sons and daughters of Ibadanland, Oba Ladoja said the creation of Ibadan State had been a long-standing demand of the people. He urged the Federal Government to consider it as a reward for the city’s historical significance and contributions to national development.
According to him, “We have been yearning for the creation of Ibadan State for many years. I appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make this dream a reality before 2027. Ibadan deserves a state of its own, and we trust that this administration will grant this request.”
The monarch’s call was greeted with loud cheers from residents and dignitaries who described the demand as long overdue, citing Ibadan’s vast population, economic strength, and cultural influence.
Governor Makinde, who officially presented the Staff of Office to the new monarch, congratulated Oba Ladoja and assured him of the state government’s continued support to sustain peace and development in Ibadanland.
Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, was crowned as the 44th Olubadan following the passing of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, in July 2025. His coronation marks the continuation of the revered traditional institution deeply rooted in Ibadan’s history.
