The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has urged the Senate to conduct its investigation into the disappearance of 3,907 firearms in a closed session, citing national security concerns.

In a letter addressed to the Senate and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary, Egbetokun commended the lawmakers for their commitment to accountability but stressed the need for discretion in handling sensitive security matters.

“We appreciate the Senate committee’s probe into the alleged missing firearms and urge that future hearings on sensitive security matters be conducted in camera. This will prevent the creation of a wrong impression in the minds of Nigerians and the international community,” the IGP stated in his letter.

He further explained that a closed-door session would minimize misinformation, safeguard national security interests, and facilitate a more open and productive fact-finding process.

Reaffirming the police force’s commitment to transparency and collaboration, Egbetokun assured that the Nigeria Police Force would continue working closely with the National Assembly to strengthen security and uphold the safety of citizens.

Responding to the request, Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the IGP’s concerns and assured that the Senate would conduct both internal and external investigations to ensure accountability and prevent future lapses.
