Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known for her widely celebrated song Omije Ojumi, has died in Lagos after a brief illness.
The death of the gospel artiste was announced on Tuesday in a statement shared on Instagram by fellow singer Ayo Melody on behalf of her family.
The statement confirmed that Akinnaanu passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital.
“With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye, also known as Omije Ojumi, who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest,” the statement read.
Akinnaanu’s death came months after she publicly appealed for prayers while battling a serious leg ailment. In October 2025, a video circulated online showing the singer during a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, where she received prayers from a cleric as she sat with her leg supported on a chair.
During the service, the cleric told the congregation that the singer had been dealing with persistent bleeding in her leg and offered prayers for healing. The video sparked widespread concern among fans and fellow gospel musicians, many of whom took to social media to pray for her recovery.
Born into a Christian home, Akinnaanu began singing at the age of 10. She later worked in the banking sector before leaving her job to pursue gospel music full time. She rose to prominence with Omije Ojumi, a song that resonated deeply with worshippers and became a regular feature in churches and Christian gatherings across Nigeria.
She went on to release other inspirational songs, including O Ti Sure, building a loyal following through her ministry and music.
Following the announcement of her death, tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans, and church members who described her as a devoted minister, passionate worshipper, and voice of encouragement to many.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
