The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has died at the age of 91, drawing the curtain on one of the most remarkable reigns in Nigeria’s traditional leadership history.

The revered monarch, who ascended the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old, reportedly passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a private hospital in Lagos.

His passing was confirmed by close family sources, though an official statement from the Ogun State Government and the Awujale’s palace was still being awaited as of press time.

For more than six decades, Oba Adetona stood as a towering figure in Nigeria’s royal institution. He not only led his people with distinction but also became a symbol of dignity, cultural strength, and outspoken advocacy for good governance and national unity.

His reign saw Ijebuland undergo major transformations. From infrastructural growth to economic advancement, the monarch played an instrumental role in positioning Ijebu as a center of peace and prosperity in the Southwest.

Described by many as courageous and principled, the late Awujale never shied away from speaking truth to power. He remained a consistent voice in national conversations—especially on leadership ethics and the constitutional recognition of traditional rulers.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona began his royal journey with youthful energy and modern ideas. Over the years, he grew into a monarch widely respected beyond the shores of Nigeria. He was frequently honoured for his wisdom and ability to bridge tradition with contemporary governance.

In recognition of his contributions to public leadership, the Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago-Iwoye renamed its School of Governance Studies after him in 2021. The gesture, many said, was a fitting tribute to a man who mentored leaders and guided generations.

Across the country, tributes have begun pouring in from political figures, traditional rulers, and cultural organizations. Many described his death as a monumental loss, not just to Ijebuland, but to the entire nation.

“This is a man who earned the respect of presidents, inspired communities, and protected the integrity of our culture,” one palace elder said.
