Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are hanging by a thread as the African qualifiers enter a critical stage. With four rounds remaining, the Super Eagles sit fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing South Africa, who lead the group with 13 points.

The next two matches are decisive. Nigeria will first host Rwanda before traveling to face South Africa in what could be a do-or-die clash. Experts say the team must win both games to maintain any chance of qualification.

Adding complexity to Nigeria’s campaign is the pending ruling on South Africa’s alleged use of an ineligible player. The outcome could significantly affect the group standings and Nigeria’s qualification chances.

Across Africa, other nations are also closing in on qualification. Egypt and Morocco appear poised to secure their spots, while Cape Verde, Algeria, and Ghana are among the teams battling for the remaining places.

Football analysts warn that the Super Eagles cannot afford complacency as the road to the World Cup becomes increasingly unforgiving. Every match now carries enormous weight, and Nigeria must rise to the occasion to avoid an early exit.
