The Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, codenamed So-Safe Corps, has arrested two suspects for allegedly stealing farm produce, including tubers of yam and other items, in the Obafemi-Owode area of the state.
The Commander of the Corps, Dr. Soji Ganzallo, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, ACC Adegunwa Adegbuyi, on Sunday.
According to the statement, the suspects, identified as Mr. Adeyinka Adewale and Mrs. Tawa Akeem, were apprehended after a case of stolen farm produce was reported at the Mokoloki-Ofada Area Command by Alhaji Hassan Salaudeen, a farmer in Lukosi, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
Ganzallo explained that the male suspect, Adewale, allegedly stole 12 big and 8 small tubers of yam from the complainant’s farm and sold part of them to his accomplice, Mrs. Akeem.
Acting on Adewale’s instruction, the female suspect reportedly moved the stolen items from Lukosi to Mokoloki market the same day to avoid suspicion.
He said, “At the point of arrest, Mrs. Tawa Akeem confessed that the yams were sold to her by Adewale. Six tubers of yam, including three big and three small ones, were recovered from her.”
Ganzallo further revealed that the suspects had been involved in a series of similar thefts in the area, adding that previous transactions between them included maize, potatoes, a bunch of banana, and a bucket of okro.
He added that the suspects and recovered items, which include six tubers of yam, wraps of fufu, a pack of chicken flavour cubes, a small Itel phone, and the sum of ₦37,900, had been handed over to the Iro Police Post for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The So-Safe Corps Commander reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to securing lives and property across the state and warned residents engaging in criminal acts to desist or face the full weight of the law.
