Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the opposition coalition as weak and incapable of defeating President Bola Tinubu, declaring that only the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has the structure to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 elections if properly organised.

Wike stated this on Thursday during his monthly media chat in Abuja, where he criticised members of the newly formed coalition, accusing them of exploiting Nigerians’ frustrations for selfish political ambitions.

According to him, most of those pushing the coalition had years in power but failed to address the country’s problems.

“I heard David Mark say Nigerians are angry, they want to rescue Nigeria. David Mark was Senate President for eight years, and there was no single project in his place. Nigerians were happy then, but now they claim people are angry,” Wike said.

He extended his criticism to other coalition members, including former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, former Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson, and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, saying their past records disqualified them from claiming to be saviours.

On the 2027 elections, Wike insisted that only the PDP could mount a credible challenge to Tinubu, but warned that internal divisions within the party must be resolved first.

“The only party today that, if they put themselves well, can still challenge this government, is the PDP. This coalition is just a distraction,” Wike declared.

He further blamed voters for recycling failed politicians through choices driven by ethnicity and religion, urging Nigerians to embrace merit over sentiments at the polls.
