The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ogun East, Abdul-Hameed Omotayo, popularly known as OmoOwo, has expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in the 2027 general elections, declaring that victory would be certain by noon on January 16, 2027.
Omotayo made the declaration at the inaugural press parley of his campaign organisation, held at OmoOwo Hall, Ijebu-Ode, on Thursday. According to a statement issued by the OmoOwo Media Office on Friday, the candidate said Ogun East deserved effective representation capable of delivering tangible benefits to its people.
“I am confident that by 12 noon on January 16, 2027, I will have defeated Dapo Abiodun. Ogun East deserves effective representation, and I am ready to provide it,” he said.
The PDP candidate criticised what he described as a longstanding culture of unfulfilled promises, arguing that residents of Ogun East needed purposeful leadership that would translate available resources and opportunities into meaningful development.
According to him, the district required more than promises of future possibilities, insisting that its people deserved competent representation that would produce practical results.
“Ogun East does not need more talk about potential. Our people have heard enough of that. What they need, what they deserve, is competent, purposeful representation that delivers practical results. That is what I am offering,” he said.
Omotayo, who has more than three decades of professional experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, attributed the perceived gap between the resources available to Ogun East and the benefits accruing to the district from the Federal Government to inadequate representation at the national level.
He explained that effective senatorial representation extended beyond political activities to include lawmaking, oversight of the executive, attracting federal interventions and ensuring that the concerns of constituents influenced national policy decisions.
“The role of a senator is specific and consequential. It is to make laws that serve the people, to hold the executive to account, to fight for the constituency’s share of federal allocations, and to ensure that the voices of communities, from Ijebu-Ode to Remo to Ogun Waterside, are heard in the chambers where the decisions that shape their lives are made,” he said.
He added that his professional experience had equipped him with the knowledge and capacity to deliver on these responsibilities.
On youth unemployment, the candidate pledged to leverage his industry connections and legislative influence to create pathways for young people in Ogun East to access vocational training, skills development and employment opportunities in the oil and gas sector and related industries.
He also promised to advocate federal support for local markets, small businesses and artisans, describing them as critical drivers of economic activities across communities in the district.
In the health sector, Omotayo said he would work with relevant federal institutions to expand residents’ access to the National Health Insurance Authority and advocate improved primary healthcare infrastructure across the nine local government areas in Ogun East.
He further pledged to pursue better funding for public schools, improved welfare for teachers and expanded access to technology infrastructure in educational institutions, noting that investment in education was essential to the district’s economic development.
The statement said a representative of the Ogun State PDP chairman, Abayomi Tella, reaffirmed the party’s recognition of Omotayo as its candidate for the Ogun East senatorial seat.
The candidate urged residents of Ijebu, Remo and Ogun Waterside to assess his ambition based on his proposed programmes and commitment to delivering measurable results.
“My message to every community in Ogun East is the same: I understand your problems. I know how to do this job. And when you call me, I will answer,” he said.
The event was attended by party stakeholders and campaign officials, including Architect Kayode Adebayo, Femi Davies, Hon. Wale Ogunbanjo, former Ijebu East Local Government chairman, Wale Adedayo, and the campaign’s director-general.
Abiodun, who is completing his second term as governor of Ogun State, was earlier adopted by leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun East as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial election.
