In a show of generosity, two nursing mothers and eight other inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Center in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, were freed on Wednesday after being unable to meet their bail conditions.

The beneficiaries, comprising three women and seven men, had been incarcerated for various offenses, with two of the women carrying their babies on their backs.

Their freedom was secured by the Olu of Itori, Oba Abul-Fatai Akamo, who paid their fines as part of activities marking his 21st year on the throne.

In addition to securing their release, the monarch provided them with transportation fare to return home and donated essential items to the correctional facility.

Accompanied by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, Oba Akamo encouraged the freed inmates to remain hopeful for a brighter future.

“Do not lose hope; a better tomorrow awaits you. Always pray for Governor Dapo Abiodun, a leader with a kind heart who will continue to support you,” the monarch assured them.

Further extending his goodwill, Oba Akamo donated N2 million to the correctional facility and expressed appreciation for the dedication of the State Controller, Adesina Abioye, and other correctional officers in managing the center.

In response, Controller Abioye, speaking on behalf of the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), commended the monarch’s act of kindness and urged other well-meaning individuals to support the facility.

“I sincerely thank Kabiyesi for fulfilling his promise. When he visited earlier, he assured us that he would celebrate his 21st anniversary by securing the release of some inmates and donating essential items, and today he has done just that.

“We need more individuals like him to support our efforts and improve conditions at the facility,” he stated.

Controller Abioye also urged the released inmates to embrace good behavior, reflect on their past, and apply the lessons learned during their time in custody.
