The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 29 year old woman, Mrs Edeh Osinachi, for allegedly burning her 17 year old domestic worker with a hot electric iron in Awka, the state capital.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the suspect was handed over to the police on Wednesday by officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Education following a report from school authorities.

Ikenga explained that teachers at the girl’s school noticed severe burn injuries on her body during a school session and immediately raised alarm, which led to further investigation by relevant authorities.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the injuries were inflicted on the victim at home by her employer, who accused her of using a mobile phone without permission,” the police spokesperson said.

According to him, the teenager alleged that her employer became angry and punished her by pressing a heated electric iron on parts of her body, causing serious injuries.

Ikenga added that during interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to committing the act.

The police command commended the vigilance and swift intervention of the school authorities, noting that their action helped prevent further harm to the minor.

He assured that the case would be thoroughly investigated and that the suspect would be prosecuted in line with the law.

The police also warned parents and guardians to be cautious when placing children in the care of others, stressing that negligence often exposes minors to abuse.

The victim is currently receiving care, while investigations continue.
