Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Friday pledged the state government’s support for the completion of the St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral project as the state paid its final respects to the late Lucia Onabanjo.

Speaking during the Funeral Mass held at the cathedral, Abiodun described Mama Onabanjo as a woman of quiet strength whose life was defined by discipline, faith and steadfast commitment to family and community.

The governor said the late matriarch lived away from the spotlight yet commanded deep respect for her humility and strong moral values. According to him, her impact was not measured by public office but by the character she nurtured within her household and the moral guidance she offered to those around her.

“In honour of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, the Iya-Ijo of this church, we will support the completion of this cathedral so it can stand as one of her enduring legacies,” the governor said, assuring church leaders that the project would receive the necessary backing for timely delivery.

Abiodun noted that Mama Onabanjo stood firmly beside her husband, former Ogun State Governor, Olabisi Onabanjo, including during challenging political periods such as his detention following the 1983 military coup. He said her resilience and unwavering support contributed significantly to the stability of her family and public life.

The governor added that her life reflected the critical role women play in shaping society through moral instruction, patience and strength behind the scenes.

In his homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described the late matriarch as a silent achiever whose devotion to the church and support for her husband’s administration left a lasting impression. He said her contributions, though largely unseen, would continue to inspire future generations.

The Funeral Mass drew prominent dignitaries, including former governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers and political leaders from within and outside Ogun State, who gathered to honour her memory.
