The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has condemned what he described as reckless driving by some truck operators along the Sango–Ota corridor, following a fatal accident at the Ota Toll Gate that claimed seven lives.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the Governor, Kayode Akinmade, on Tuesday.
The tragic crash, which reportedly involved a trailer tanker that suffered brake failure, led to the death of six men and one woman. Two other victims, a male and a female, sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. In all, nine persons were involved in the accident.
Abiodun described the development as painful and unacceptable, saying the loss of innocent lives through preventable negligence was one too many.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength and comfort for them in this difficult time.
The governor directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, insisting that anyone found culpable must face the full weight of the law.
He also called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations along the busy corridor, urging the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps to heighten vigilance to prevent a recurrence.
In a related development, the Executive Chairman of Ado Odo Ota Local Government, Lawal Adewale Wasiu, visited the scene shortly after the incident alongside key local government officials.
He received briefings from security operatives coordinating rescue and traffic control efforts.
The chairman expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and stressed the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations.
He also cautioned against roadside trading and other risky activities that expose residents and commuters to avoidable danger, assuring that the council would collaborate with relevant agencies to strengthen safety compliance within the axis.
