The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed claims circulating on social media that a young woman who alleged rape in a viral TikTok video was arrested, insisting that she was never detained at any point.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi.
The controversy began after a TikToker identified as Mirabel, with the handle @mirab351, posted a distressing video alleging that she was sexually assaulted in her apartment.
In the clip, she claimed that an unknown man broke into her home while she was unconscious, physically assaulted her and raped her.
She further alleged that the attacker sent her threatening messages and that she had attempted suicide as a result of the trauma.
The video quickly gained traction on social media, including X, formerly known as Twitter, generating outrage and calls for justice. Initial reports suggested the incident occurred in Lagos. However, preliminary findings later indicated that the alleged assault took place in Ogijo, Ogun State, prompting the Ogun State Police Command to assume responsibility for the investigation.
Amid the growing reactions, some social media users alleged that the victim had been arrested, raising suspicions that she may have fabricated the claim due to perceived inconsistencies in her account.
Responding to the rumours, Oluseyi stated that the victim voluntarily presented herself at the Ibafo Police Division on Wednesday, February 18, to lodge a formal complaint.
He explained that after a preliminary assessment, she was transferred to the Ogijo Division, which has jurisdiction over the area where the incident allegedly occurred.
According to him, she was found to be in an unstable condition and unable to provide detailed information at that time.
“She was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical check-up, and her health is being closely monitored, as her wellbeing remains paramount. At no time was the victim arrested,” the statement read.
The Command maintained that the matter is being handled professionally and urged members of the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it.

The police assured residents that further updates would be communicated as investigations continue.
