A graduate of the National Open University of Nigeria, Matthew Ogunsuada, has emerged as the Best Graduating Student in the 2023/2024 Master of Science, Mass Communication set at the University of Lagos, finishing with a Distinction.
Ogunsuada, who earned a Second Class Upper degree from NOUN in 2023, proceeded to the University of Lagos for what he described as a more rigorous and conventional academic experience. His decision paid off as he topped his class, distinguishing himself among his peers in the highly competitive programme.
A broadcast journalist with Voice of the People Television, where he hosts the education focused programme Edu Dialogue, Ogunsuada combines on air presentation with reporting, production and content development.
He began his broadcasting career with Celestial Honours Television before moving to his current station, steadily building professional capacity while pursuing academic excellence.
Reflecting on his journey, Ogunsuada described the achievement as a testament to faith, resilience and perseverance. Having lost his mother at the age of seven and his father at sixteen, he said his background never defined his ambition. According to him, his education at NOUN provided the foundation and exposure that helped him secure opportunities in the broadcast industry.
While studying at NOUN, he also enrolled for the professional examinations of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, earning the status of Associate Member after successfully completing the programme.
He further strengthened his profile through courses at the National Broadcast Academy, membership of the Institute of Corporate and Public Sector Professionals, and certification from the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria.
At the University of Lagos, Ogunsuada initially commenced an MSc in Public Relations and Advertising but later switched to Broadcast Journalism in order to align his academic pursuit with his professional practice.
He explained that the transition demanded extra discipline, intensive reading, active participation in presentations and strict adherence to deadlines.
Balancing early morning television production with lectures and academic assignments, he said careful time management and determination were crucial to his success.
He added that graduating with distinction has enhanced his professional credibility and opened doors to further academic and leadership opportunities.
Ogunsuada encouraged young people, especially those facing adversity, to remain steadfast in faith and committed to excellence.
Background, he said, should not determine destiny, as resilience and good character can transform pain into purpose.
