Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team at the age of 39, bringing an end to a remarkable 20-year international career with the Albiceleste.

The Argentina captain announced his decision on Monday in an emotional statement shared on his verified social media platforms, describing the decision as painful but necessary.

“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts in my soul, but I understand that this is the moment,” Messi said.

The announcement comes after Messi led Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final, where they finished runners-up to Spain. He had made his senior international debut in 2005 and leaves the national team as its most-capped player and leading goalscorer, with 207 appearances and 125 goals, according to Sky Sports.

Messi said his decision was not a reflection of only the successful years of his international career, insisting that he had always given everything for Argentina, including during the difficult periods.

“I always gave everything, not just the last few years when everything was won, and I always fought and gave everything for this jersey, for giving them joy and making them proud to be Argentinians through football,” he said.

The forward, who guided Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and two Copa América triumphs, said he believed the time had come for a new generation to take responsibility.

“I emptied myself, I no longer have anything more to give, and besides, there are very great young players coming up who deserve to be here,” Messi said.

His retirement closes one of the most significant chapters in Argentina’s football history. Messi endured years of criticism after losing major finals with the national team before finally ending Argentina’s long wait for a World Cup in Qatar in 2022. He also won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024.

The 39-year-old said he would miss being part of the national team but would continue supporting Argentina as a fan.

“I will miss hearing from you from the inside a lot. Now I will be one of you, always cheering and supporting from the outside,” he wrote.

Messi also expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates and officials who accompanied him throughout his career.

“Thank you to each of the coaches, teammates, and leaders I had the chance to share with. I take away memories and unforgettable moments lived,” he said.

He added that he was leaving with “the peace and pride” of having given Argentine supporters unforgettable moments alongside his teammates.

“It was crazy to have lived it with you. I love you!” Messi said.

Messi revealed that he had written the farewell message shortly after the 2026 World Cup final but delayed making it public. Reports say the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi, strengthened his resolve to end his international career.

The football legend ended his farewell with a final expression of gratitude for his country.

“Thank you God for making me Argentine. Go Argentina!” Messi wrote.
