Four persons were killed and another injured in a fatal road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Wednesday.
The accident occurred at about 4 a.m. around Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, along the Ibadan-Lagos route, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
The crash involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
The FRSC said eight persons were involved in the crash. Four male adults died, while one male adult sustained injuries. Three other persons escaped unhurt.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, preliminary investigation showed that speeding and wrongful overtaking contributed to the crash.
Odunsi said the Mitsubishi driver, who was reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving HOWO truck while attempting to overtake.
He added that fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, as the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey.
The FRSC rescue team received the distress call at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 4:39 a.m., recording a six-minute response time.
The injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The command said the two damaged vehicles were handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.
He also advised motorists embarking on long-distance trips to take adequate rest before driving and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible.
