Nigerian chess prodigy and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon after a grueling 64-hour match held at New York City’s Times Square.

Onakoya achieved the historic feat alongside American chess partner Shawn Martinez, completing the marathon between April 17 and April 20, 2025.

Reacting to the achievement, Onakoya expressed gratitude and described the moment as one of resilience and purpose. “This record is not just for me—it’s for every child from the slums who has ever dared to dream,” he said while being cheered by supporters and passersby in Times Square.

The new record surpasses the previous 61-hour, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds set by Norway’s Odin Blikra Vea and Askild Bryn. Interestingly, Onakoya had previously broken the record in April 2024 with a 60-hour performance, but the title was later reclaimed by the Norwegian duo two months later.

Onakoya’s recent feat has not only won him global recognition but also further spotlighted his mission to empower underprivileged children through the game of chess.

He leads Chess in Slums Africa, a widely acclaimed initiative dedicated to providing education and mentorship to marginalized children through chess. The movement has grown significantly in recent years, changing lives and drawing international attention.

“This is a win for the entire continent,” Onakoya added. “It proves that our stories, our dreams, and our brilliance matter on the world stage.”
