A 500-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Mr. Samson Oyelaran, has died following a fatal motorbike accident along the Abeokuta/Ibadan Expressway.

The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, near the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) axis at Kotopo. Mr. Oyelaran, a student of the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management (AQFM), College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM), was reportedly riding his personal motorbike when the accident happened.

He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital by passersby but was declared dead on arrival.

Confirming the unfortunate development, the Acting Head of Department, Dr. Abdulraheem Ikililu, Mr. Olusegun Ogunyemi of the Nigerian Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the President of the Student Union, Mr. Ibraheem Adeyemi, immediately visited the hospital where Mr. Oyelaran was taken.

His remains were later deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, and he was laid to rest on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

In an act of compassion, the University, considering the financial challenges faced by the family, covered all necessary expenses, including the costs for the release of his body and the burial arrangements.

“The University fully shouldered the burial expenses in light of the deceased’s family’s financial challenges,” said Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide, Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations.

Following the burial, some members of the Student Union, in solidarity with the late student, engaged in a peaceful protest at Camp Junction along the expressway. The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Festus Adeosun, and the Assistant Chief Environmental Officer, Mr. Peter Bolarinwa, swiftly intervened to calm the students and prevent escalation.

Extending its condolences, FUNAAB described Oyelaran’s death as a painful and tragic loss. “The University extends its deepest condolences to the family of late Mr. Samson Oyelaran, the Student Union, and the entire University community over this painful loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” Mr. Olajide stated.
