Thirteen-year-old swimming sensation Michelle Ibidapo has clinched gold in the 1,500m women’s freestyle event at the ongoing National Sports Festival taking place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Representing Team Oyo, the young athlete—who is a student of The Grange School, Ikeja—delivered a stunning performance at the festival’s swimming centre in Shagamu, earning widespread praise from spectators and sports officials alike.

Michelle was first discovered at the National Youth Games held in Asaba, where her raw talent was evident. Since then, she has steadily risen through Nigeria’s sports development ranks and is now standing tall on the nation’s biggest sporting stage.

Speaking after her historic victory, Michelle expressed joy and determination:

“Coming into this competition, I was focused. I had my mind on winning a medal, even though I wasn’t sure what colour. During the last lap, I reminded myself to stay focused, and by the end, it turned into gold,” she told reporters.

The young swimmer’s feat not only earned her a place on the winner’s podium but also symbolized the growing impact of structured youth talent discovery in Nigeria.

Sports analysts and officials have hailed her victory as proof that platforms like the National Youth Games are bearing fruit.

“Michelle’s win is a clear testament to what can happen when young talents are properly scouted and nurtured. Her journey from Asaba to Abeokuta should inspire a new generation of athletes,” one official at the festival remarked.
