The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in the sum of ₦50 million following her arraignment by the Federal Government over alleged defamation.
Justice Chizoba Orji, presiding over the case, ordered that the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District must provide one surety who is of reputable standing, resides within the Federal Capital Territory, and owns a landed property within the Abuja Municipal Area Council.
The bail was granted on Thursday after the lawmaker pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge bordering on alleged defamation of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier been arraigned before the same court, where the Federal Government accused her of making harmful imputations, including an allegation that both Akpabio and Bello were involved in a plot to assassinate her.
The charge, which cited Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code, alleges that the Senator made statements capable of injuring the reputation of the complainants.
Supporters and dignitaries flooded the courtroom during Thursday’s session, including her husband, former Minister of Education Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, and prominent rights activist Aisha Yesufu, who were both present to show solidarity.
The court adjourned the matter while setting strict conditions to ensure the lawmaker remains within jurisdiction for the duration of the trial.
Further proceedings are expected in the coming weeks as the prosecution prepares to present key witnesses, including Senate President Akpabio and former Governor Bello.
