The Plateau State Government has confirmed that a fresh outbreak of Lassa fever has resulted in the deaths of two individuals in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Jos, the state capital. He revealed that the state had recorded three cases of the viral disease, with two fatalities and one patient currently receiving treatment.

According to Dr. Shurkuk, the cases were identified in Kanam and Shendam local government areas. “One of the victims died in Shendam, while another is currently undergoing treatment at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital,” he stated.

Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness, is caused by the Lassa virus, which is primarily transmitted to humans through exposure to food or household items contaminated with the urine or feces of infected rats. Symptoms include headache, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, and abdominal pain.

Following reports of the outbreak, Dr. Shurkuk said the Plateau State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), swiftly deployed a response team to affected communities for on-the-spot assessments and public awareness campaigns.

“We have traced all contacts, and thankfully, they have tested negative. There is no cause for alarm, but we advise residents to maintain strict hygiene and seek medical attention immediately if they experience any symptoms,” he assured.

The commissioner also emphasized the importance of early medical intervention, lamenting that many patients seek treatment too late.

He urged residents to prioritize environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene as preventive measures against the spread of communicable diseases.
