The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has announced its decision to appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, acquitted and discharged former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, of alleged N6.9 billion fraud.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke ruled in favour of the former governor, dismissing the 11-count charge filed against him and his company, Spotless Investment Limited. Fayose had been facing allegations bordering on money laundering and stealing, stemming from his time in office.
The EFCC, in a statement issued shortly after the verdict, said it is dissatisfied with the court’s decision and has begun the process of filing an appeal.
“The Commission is currently studying the ruling with a view to appealing. We remain committed to the rule of law and to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement read.
Fayose was re-arraigned on July 2, 2019, following his initial arraignment in 2018. The prosecution alleged that he benefitted from illegal funds linked to the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd), during the 2014 presidential campaign.
Reacting to the judgment, a senior official of the anti-graft agency said, “We respect the court, but we also believe that there are grounds to test this verdict at the appellate level.”
