Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has paid a condolence visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing the revered monarch as one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers who contributed immensely to the country’s socio-economic development.

Zulum, who led a delegation from Borno State to the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, said the death of the Awujale was not only a painful loss to Ogun State but also to the government and people of Borno.

He said, “The Awujale was a good man. His personality and dignity were never in doubt. The relationship with the people of Borno and the entire people of Southwestern Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. We have a lot of commonalities in terms of traditions, culture, and more.

“We cannot sit at home and commiserate with the government and people of Ogun State over the telephone. That is why we decided to come in person. May his family find the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

The Borno governor also commended Governor Abiodun for promoting national unity and building bridges across political and ethnic lines through his constant engagements across regions.

Responding, Governor Abiodun described the late monarch as a man of principle, integrity, and commitment to the well-being of his people. He noted that Oba Adetona’s fairness and religious tolerance brought harmony to Ijebuland.

“Kabiyesi was a great man. He meant something to everyone and treated all his subjects equally. He would call a spade a spade until the very end,” Abiodun said.

He revealed that Prof. Zulum was the first person he informed about the monarch’s passing while they were both in London on a visit to the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I am deeply touched by your gesture. It shows you are connected to us in Ogun State. Ogun and Borno have so much in common in terms of tradition and history. You felt duty-bound to be here. This is a rare display of love, compassion, and brotherhood,” the governor added.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the first son of the late monarch, Prince Adesire Adetona, expressed appreciation for the nationwide outpouring of sympathy, saying the visit of the Borno delegation signified that Nigerians stand with the family during their moment of grief.

He also commended Governor Abiodun and the state government for honouring his father with a befitting burial and thanked the people of Ogun for their overwhelming support.
