At least 14 persons have been confirmed dead following a fresh attack in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The victims, mostly women and youths, were reportedly ambushed by suspected herdsmen on Tuesday evening while returning from a local market.
Chairman of the local government, Monday Kasa, confirmed the tragic incident in a telephone conversation on Wednesday.
He said the assailants attacked commuters at the Marish and Chirang communities, leading to multiple casualties.
“The attackers struck when the villagers were on their way back from the market. Four people were killed in Marish and ten in Chirang.”
“Burial plans are already underway for the victims. It is a terrible situation,” Kasa stated.
The attack comes barely a week after a similar ambush left at least eight people dead in the neighbouring Mangu LGA.
Kasa lamented the repeated assaults in the region and called on security agencies to step up surveillance and response.
