The Coordinator of The SixthSense Initiative, Abiodun Lasile, has lamented the lack of sponsorship for education-focused projects, especially those designed to uplift underprivileged children through reading and literacy.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Lasile expressed frustration over the continued neglect of initiatives like the Summer Children Reading Camp which is currently ongoing in Abeokuta, Ogun State and other literacy programme he has been developing to help vulnerable children access quality reading and learning opportunities.

According to him, the reading camp was launched to provide access to books, reading support, and basic educational tools for children who are often left behind due to poverty and lack of access. However, despite the noble goals of the project, it has struggled to receive meaningful financial support.

“We have knocked on several doors and reached out to numerous organisations and individuals.”

“But while entertainment projects enjoy massive sponsorships, initiatives like ours receive silence or polite rejections,” Lasile said.

He added that the only support so far has come in the form of goodwill and encouragement from friends and volunteers, which, though appreciated, is not enough to meet the programme’s needs.

Lasile decried what he described as a societal shift in priorities, where glitz and glamour are rewarded, while efforts to empower young minds are sidelined.

“Millions are being poured into entertainment, but initiatives that can actually shape futures and change lives are being overlooked,” he said.

The ongoing summer camp, which began earlier this month, features reading sessions, storytelling, creative learning activities, and mentorship for children across different age groups.

Lasile stressed that with adequate sponsorship, the programme has the potential to expand its reach and impact more children across the state and beyond.

“I remain hopeful that there are still individuals and organisations out there who believe in literacy, who understand the power of reading to change destinies,” he added.

He called on the government, corporate bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to support educational projects and help bridge the widening gap between entertainment and human capacity development.
