Former Anambra State Governor and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the decision by Ibom Air to impose a lifetime flight ban on a young female passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, describing it as an example of how Nigeria’s justice system often spares the powerful while swiftly punishing the poor.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi said he had publicly apologised to the airline and its crew over the passenger’s conduct, but expressed shock that the ban was announced barely hours later.
He described the decision as “authoritarian” and questioned the speed with which the sanction was imposed. “What due process was followed overnight leading to this sanction? Have we exhausted the avenues of justice and compassionate resolution on this matter?” he asked.
Quoting ancient Greek philosopher Anacharsis, Obi noted that “the law is like a spider’s web: it catches the weak, while the powerful break through with ease,” adding that the swiftness in Ms. Emmanson’s case stood in sharp contrast to the slow or non-existent action against politically connected offenders.
“It is a tragic irony that a young lady in her twenties can be banned for life, while those in positions of authority perpetrate far greater offences that harm the nation deeply, yet move freely in comfort, shielded from consequences,” he said.
Obi argued that justice must be consistent and free from class bias. “Justice must be equal for all. There must be room for compassion, for rehabilitation, and for understanding when misconduct stems from frustration or displaced aggression. Power must never determine who is punished and who is pardoned,” he stated.
He concluded by calling for reforms to ensure fairness in the system, saying, “May God heal our land. A new Nigeria is possible.”
