Manchester United suffered a humiliating exit from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night as League Two side Grimsby Town shocked the Red Devils with a 12-11 penalty shootout victory at Blundell Park.
The hosts stunned United with two first-half goals, with Charles Vernam opening the scoring in the 22nd minute before Toby Warren doubled the lead just eight minutes later following a costly error from returning goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Despite a poor start, United fought back in the second half. Substitute Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back in the 75th minute before captain Harry Maguire struck a dramatic equaliser in the final minute of normal time to force penalties.
What followed was one of the longest shootouts in the competition’s history. Matheus Cunha failed to seal the win for United in the regulation five kicks, and Mbeumo’s second penalty was later saved, allowing Grimsby to edge the shootout 12-11 and spark wild celebrations from the home crowd.
Grimsby’s Cameron Gardner, who earned the man-of-the-match award with a 9.14 average rating, led a spirited performance that left United red-faced and their fans in disbelief.
