Fenerbahce have sacked Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho just over a year into his contract, following the club’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League playoffs at the hands of Benfica.
The Turkish giants confirmed the decision in a statement on Friday, saying, “We are parting ways with Jose Mourinho, manager of our professional A team since the 2024-2025 season.”
Mourinho, who joined Fenerbahce in June 2024 with much fanfare, was brought in to restore the club’s European glory and strengthen their domestic push. However, the disappointing defeat to Benfica earlier this week sealed his fate.
The 61-year-old coach had previously managed top European clubs including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma. His arrival at Fenerbahce was seen as a major coup for Turkish football, raising expectations among fans.
With Mourinho’s exit, attention now turns to who will take charge of Fenerbahce as they aim to recover from their early European setback and push forward in the domestic league.
