Lagos State authorities have arrested a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver after a pedestrian, identified as Elizabeth Fresh, was fatally struck by a high-capacity bus at Airport Junction, Ikeja.

The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving a bus operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company under the regulation of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

According to a statement dated January 12, 2026, and signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the driver initially fled the scene but was later located and handed over to the police.

“Eyewitnesses confirmed that Miss Fresh was struck by a high-capacity bus, which we later confirmed was operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company,” the statement said.

LAMATA said it promptly contacted the victim’s family to offer condolences. The family demanded that the driver be arrested and prosecuted. The authority assured the family that it was working closely with the bus operator to ensure that the driver was identified, apprehended, and handed over to the police for legal action.

Following a formal directive, the driver was presented by the bus company on Monday, January 13, and handed over to the police at the domestic wing police station of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in the presence of the company’s manager.

Describing the incident as a tragic loss, LAMATA reiterated its commitment to safety and accountability across all transport services under its regulation. The authority also urged pedestrians to use footbridges when crossing BRT corridors, warning that failure to do so could result in serious accidents.

LAMATA affirmed its dedication to working with transport operators, security agencies, and the public to prevent similar tragedies and enhance commuter safety across Lagos.
