The Ogun State Ministry of Culture and Tourism has pledged strong collaboration with the Abeokuta Polo Club as part of efforts to diversify the State’s tourism offerings and stimulate economic growth.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, gave the assurance while hosting representatives of the Abeokuta Polo Club, led by its President, Dr. Adams Sheriff, at his office in Oke-Mosan.

Describing the introduction of the Polo Game as a timely and strategic move, Hon. Fagbayi said, “The Polo Game is a welcome development in Ogun State. It has tremendous economic potential — from creating jobs to boosting tourism.”

He noted that the Ministry would fully integrate Polo into its tourism activities and commended the Club’s leadership for its proactive efforts.

“I am very appreciative of this laudable idea you are bringing to the State, and this will be the biggest Polo Centre in the southwest. As a government, we will continue in our own capacity to give you the necessary institutional support by including it in the tourism calendar, as well as making the club a tourist attraction of choice,” the Commissioner assured.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Yusuff Quudus, emphasized the broader vision surrounding the initiative, noting the need for complementary hospitality infrastructure.

“We must begin to think ahead about developing hotels and resorts around the Centre. This will not only attract more tourists but will also generate significant revenue for the Club, the Ministry, and the State at large,” Dr. Quudus said.

In his remarks, President of the Abeokuta Polo Club, Dr. Adams Sheriff, revealed that plans were already underway for the Club’s maiden event.

“Our first event, tagged ‘Culture and Tourism Polo Tournament,’ is scheduled for May 3, 2025. We are also aligning with the Lisabi Festival to maximize visibility and embed Polo firmly into Ogun’s rich tourism calendar,” Dr. Sheriff explained.
